PILLGWENLLY
PRIMARY SCHOOL
We are pleased to have successfully handed over yet another project, with Pillgwenlly Primary School (formally known as Whiteheads) now open to the public of Newport.
The £2 Million mechanical contract was secured by our CMB West Office in October 2023 and only 9 months after starting on site, has been handed back to the client with students now working from the school as of this month.
The school, which was funded by Newport Council and Welsh Government through the Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme, offers an exceptional educational experience to 686 pupils, and in keeping with Newport Council's aspirations, it has achieved Operational Net Zero Carbon status by using a variety of different technologies including Air Source Heat Pumps, Photovoltaics, low air permeability and low U-Values.
Built on the site of the new housing development on Mendalgief Road, it now houses a nursery and a brand new state-of-the-art 3G pitch which can also be used by the local community. The school will also boast the first Welsh-medium learning resource base for pupils with additional learning needs in Newport.
The Mechanical services installed by CMB included:
-
Air Source Heat Pumps for heating and hot water generation – these electrically powered ASHP’s are the primary heating plant and provide a means of generating domestic hot water.
-
Underfloor heating system
-
Fresh Air Ventilation utilising Natural Ventilation Heat Recovery Units - the classrooms are equipped with NVHR Units that when required, draw in external fresh air via window louvres to regulate carbon dioxide levels.
-
Extract Ventilation
-
Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR)
-
Domestic Water Systems.
-
Above ground drainage
-
Building Management Control System (BMS) – utilises a dedicated control panel within the plantroom which accommodates the mechanical services equipment and peripheral systems.
-
Sanitaryware
-
Firefighting Sprinkler System
Councillor Deb Davies, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for education and early years, said: “This is another fantastic new school providing an excellent learning environment and helping to meet the increased demand for places in Wales’ fastest growing city. I would like to thank all those involved in ensuring that there has been a smooth transfer from the previous building to the new one.”
Acting Head Teacher Andrew Sheppard added: “Pupils and staff are delighted with the new building which provides first-class facilities where our growing school community can thrive and flourish."
