The BBC Elstree Centre is a television production facility based in Borehamwood (just outside of Watford) and after CMB secured the £3.9 Million Mechanical and Electrical contract for the project earlier this year to work under Principal Contractor Mitie, we commenced with works on site in May 2024.
The facility was initially built as a film studio in 1914 and was converted to a television studio in 1960, where it has since been the home to filming for the likes of EastEnders, Holby City, Children in Need, Comic Relief and more.
The original 16-acre campus comprises of seven stages, a workshop, offices and postproduction facilities. The BBC are now upgrading some of these facilities to provide additional office space, editing and dubbing suites and a variation of other areas for the production of their television series and more.
The building is designed to have an industrial look from within by having many of the M&E services on show. We are currently carrying out the M&E works to an existing scenery block in the middle of the site – some of these include installing a new centralised ventilation system, new air conditioning VRV system, upgrading the electrical incoming supplies and providing a coordinated installation that suits the needs of the users. Our team have also recently began works on the plantroom and external plant area as part of Phase 1, as well as the reception and lobby area, the main entrance, the installation of sound proofed editing and dubbing suites, dressing rooms, first floor suites and executive staff offices.
There are also follow up works that we have been contracted to deliver on another phase of this project that we look forward to sharing progress works on in the coming months.
