Project Update - Hounsome Fields Primary School

Writer: CMB EngineeringCMB Engineering

CMB secured the £950K Mechanical contract for Hounsome Fields Primary School back in November of last year and have since been on site for 5 months.

The school is based on a brand-new development in Basingstoke and will provide up to 420 spaces for pupils aged 4 – 11, with an additional 8 spaces being allocated for children with special educational needs. This eco-friendly school will serve the rapidly growing communities from two new housing developments in the area and will serve as the first Climate Change Primary School Pilot project developed by Hampshire County Council to target a Passivhaus Classic certification.

The building is prefabrication in nature, being delivered and assembled throughout 2024 with it officially becoming watertight as of last month. The ventilation is served via a Swegon internal unit based in a first-floor plantroom, looking after two main halls as well as all classrooms and associated offices. Meanwhile, fire safety is covered via TROX, with both smoke and standard fire dampers.

We’ve opted to use Viega pipe systems to cover the LTHW installation with the specified heavy tube – a robust solution that works well with a tight programme. The main plantroom is progressing well and is being served by a GSHP system which we will utilise to supply the LTHW radiators and heater battery in the AHU. The BMS is now also set up with Bac Net capability.

On completion, the school will have 14 classrooms across its 2 floors, as well as a large sports field, a play area, a football pitch, a courtyard and an early year’s playground, and will have the capacity for optional expansion to accommodate a further 200 pupils if later needed.

We’re pleased to be bringing this latest eco-friendly educational facility to the people of Basingstoke and look forward to providing another update soon.
