World Mental Health Day 2023

Today is World Mental Health Day 2023. The theme for 2023, set by the World Foundation of Mental Health, is ‘Mental health is a Universal Human Right’.

CMB use this day to remind you that your mental health is a right and is as important to us as your physical health.

Construction work has a variety of pressures from tight contracts and managing budgets, to long hours and high-pressure environments. This can result in pressure on mental health and wellbeing. UK wide surveys found that over two-thirds of construction workers do not discuss their mental health complications with colleagues due to stigma. Research from mental health charity, Mates in Mind, found two people working in construction take their own lives every day - over 700 people per year. This is a shocking 10 times more deaths than from health and safety accidents - according to further research from Mates in Mind.

As an engineering company, we understand we need to be part of the change surrounding mental health within construction which is why we are proud to have 15 members of staff registered as ‘Mental Health Champions.’ These individuals are there to offer confidential support to the rest of our workforce regarding mental health and wellbeing. By raising awareness of mental health in CMB and providing our staff with the support that they need, we can begin to change the attitudes towards mental health in construction and help to build a stronger and more supported workplace in future.

If you have any issues, please speak up. A problem shared, is a problem halved.
